Visual Motor Skills
What are Visual Motor Skills?
Visual motor skills are the skills that emerge from the integration of visual skills, visual perceptual skills, and motor skills. Visual motor skills are utilized when a child catches a tennis ball, kicks a soccer ball or produces legible handwriting. A child who demonstrates decreased visual motor skills may exhibit difficulty cutting, poor handwriting, poor eye-hand coordination, and difficulty copying from the board at school.
Our Approach at North Shore Pediatric Therapy
At North Shore Pediatric Therapy, our therapists work with children with visual motor integration difficulties by using a multisensory approach to provide the child with additional sensory experiences. Deficits in visual motor integration may be caused by difficulties with underlying visual perceptual skills and fine motor skills; therefore, our therapists engage the child in various activities that incorporate movement, tactile, visual, and auditory sensations to enhance visual and fine motor skills.
