The speech therapy team at North Shore Pediatric Therapy continues to grow, and has speech therapists at three locations in the northern Chicago area, including Bucktown, Glenview, and Highland Park. Each clinic has qualified speech therapists who have experience in all areas of speech & language development.
These areas include, but are not limited to the following:
- Receptive Language
- Expressive Language
- Apraxia of Speech
- Swallowing and Feeding
- Articulation and Phonology
- Oral Motor
- Pragmatic/Social Language
- Memory
- Cognition
- Auditory Processing
- Stuttering and Fluency
Impairments in the previously listed areas may be related to neurological impairments, such as autism, Down’s Syndrome, and Cerebral Palsy. Children with typical neurological development may also experience difficulty in these areas as well. Following an evaluation to assess each child’s strengths and areas of need, goals are formulated, and speech therapy is initiated to assist the child in reaching these goals.
While speech therapy is goal-oriented and centered on each child’s individual areas of strengths and needs, each session allows not only for structured therapy activities, but it also encourages the child to express his or her own preferences while selecting these activities. Opportunities to co-treat with other therapy specialties, such as occupational therapy, physical therapy, and applied behavior analysis promote simultaneous growth in these areas.
The key to pediatric speech therapy, as with therapy in general, is to challenge the child while fostering a warm and welcoming environment. The child thus develops skills while having fun at the same time. When these two aspects of therapy remain in balance with each other, the child is able to make sustained progress toward the goals and ultimately the child is able to maximize his/her potential. North Shore Pediatric Therapy’s speech team brings understanding to the parents, caregivers, and teachers, by providing parent meetings, school visits, and community seminars. Home programs are also created to assist the families by encouraging the child to use the skills that are taught in therapy in locations outside of the clinic.
We hope to have the opportunity to meet you, as well as to demonstrate to you the results that we will achieve with your child.
